There is something soothing about sitting in front of a fish tank watching brightly colored bodies gracefully swim through the water. Although cats and dogs are the most popular household pets, they can make a lot of noise but fishes amuse us silently.

Keeping fish is a fantastic learning experience for 

children, they will create interest and curiosity.

Fish can quickly become a part of our family;

some fish will even interact with you and are very playful.

In comparison to other animals, fish keeping is a relatively inexpensive hobby. The cost depends on the breeds you decide to keep, obviously the fancier you go, the more expensive the hobby becomes.

They are very independent, and don’t suffer from anxiety when we leave them.

In a survey carried out by APPA, it was found that 34% of households that keep fish say they consider keeping fish to be a rewarding hobby and they look beautiful.

  1. Betta Fish / fighter fish

They live in shallow pools, small streams, roadside ditches and even rice paddies.

Betta's Natural Habitat

Bettas are native to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam,  Malaysia and Indonesia. Their natural habitat is often shaded by overhanging trees, shrubs and aquatic vegetation.

There are over 70 recognized species of Betta, many of which

are now endangered in the wild. The betta fish that we buy as 

pets are usually Betta splendens or imbellis, however, hybrids

of these two species as well as smaragdina are common in the hobby.

This fish is popular aquarium fish are famous for their bright       

coloration, versatility, and spunky appearance.

  • to keeping this type of fish we need at least 18 liters’ size tank
  • Cory Catfish, Plecos, and certain Tetras are some suitable tank mates for betta fish.
  • Bettas prefer calm water with a pH between 6.8 and 7.5. While they may seem to tolerate cooler temperatures, it’s best for their overall health to keep the temperature between 76° and 85° F. If the aquarium is kept in rooms below 76°, use an Aqueon Aquatic Flat Heater or Mini Heater with bowls and other small aquarium containers.

Ornamental fishes of India are contributing about 1% of the total ornamental fish trade. These fishes are exported to the tune of 69.26 tons, having the value of Rupees 566.66 crores in 2014 – 15.

On an average, an Annual growth rate of about 11 percent has been recorded during the period 1995 to 2014.

India has great potentials in Ornamental fish production due to the presence of rich biodiversity of species, favorable climatic conditions and availability of cheap labor.

Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal mainly practice ornamental fish farming in India.
